STAR Project: Transformation for Sustainable Development - a research and innovation network for high-quality information, improved sustainability reporting practices, and business resilience.

Sustainability reporting is a key element of corporate responsibility and transparency in today’s business landscape. It involves disclosing an organization’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance to various stakeholders, including investors, customers, employees, and the public.

In response to the growing need for oversight of companies’ sustainability strategies and actions, recent legislative changes approved by the European Commission emphasize a shift from voluntary to mandatory ESG disclosures. This shift is part of a broader global effort to combat climate change and social inequality, based on a common framework for sustainability data. In this context, collaboration among researchers, policymakers, and practitioners is essential to advance this critical field.

Project Objective

The aim of the STAR project is to create a transnational, cross-sectoral, and interdisciplinary research network to design and provide a comprehensive understanding of how cultural and contextual factors influence sustainability reporting practices—specifically how companies disclose ESG risks and opportunities.

Research Objectives:

  1. To explore cultural barriers and identify cultural factors that support high-quality non-financial ESG disclosures.

  2. To systematically collect and analyze data to better understand the complex relationships between cultural, regional, and sectoral factors and ESG reporting practices.

  3. To define modern, interdisciplinary models incorporating culturally sensitive information and promote effective disclosure strategies for improved sustainability reporting.

The STAR project goes beyond the current debate on the quality of sustainability data and information. It proposes a robust research approach that combines international, interdisciplinary, and cross-sectoral collaboration to develop more effective and culturally relevant reporting strategies. These are key tools for enhancing transparency, accountability, and business resilience.

The project supports international collaboration through a staff exchange program. Currently, we greet you from sunny Italy, where Agnieszka Sznyk, President of INNOWO, has begun a one-month research stay in Turin. As part of this European initiative, we are conducting interviews with local companies to better understand their ESG reporting practices.
